Fashion, including men’s fashion, is said to be constantly evolving – changing under the influence of social norms, cultural shifts, available technology, and individual preferences. This applies to all parts of our wardrobe, including socks, which have undergone a long journey and numerous transformations over the years. Initially serving a purely practical function of foot protection, socks have now become a significant element of styling. Especially men’s socks! A closer look at them reveals that men’s fashion doesn’t have to be dull and monotonous. On the contrary, well-chosen men’s socks allow for the expression of individual style, the creation of a thoughtful image, the infusion of some casualness into formal attire, and making the whole ensemble look more interesting and truly stylish. Below, we tell the story of how the style of men’s socks has evolved over the decades.
The History of Men’s Socks in a Nutshell
If we consider socks as soft foot coverings worn inside shoes, their history begins in antiquity. Back then, people wore “piloi” – intertwined animal hair providing protection against dirt and injuries. A later stage introduced “udones” – pieces of fabric sewn together and worn on the feet, resembling modern socks at least in shape (if not quality).
Early medieval times brought, among other things, “onuce” – rectangular or square pieces of fabric used for wrapping the feet. Worn with high-top shoes, they prevented chafing and protected against cold (at that time, other forms of footwear insulation had not yet been invented). In the Middle Ages, there were also something akin to today’s knee-high socks, initially without feet, resembling more like stockings. They were tied to the calf with garters. Later came knitted silk stockings (of course, for men, although slightly shorter than the modern version for women).

A Turning Point in the History of Socks
The first major breakthrough in sock history occurred in 1589 when English clergyman William Lee, wanting to relieve his wife from hand-knitting socks, invented a knitting machine. Despite initial resistance, the invention eventually gained popularity – revolutionizing the market, and although socks were still made exclusively from natural materials (such as wool, cotton, and silk), mass production began. Another breakthrough was the introduction of nylon in 1938. Since then (as the process continues to this day, albeit modernized), we have been experimenting by mixing different fibers in a single sock.
The Evolution of Men’s Socks Style in the 20th Century
Although the history of socks is undoubtedly fascinating, due to technological revolution, we can only speak of those corresponding to modern models from the early 20th century onwards.
Let’s trace the types of socks men wore in each decade:
- In the first decade of the 20th century, men’s socks still served mainly practical purposes. Made of natural materials such as wool and cotton, they kept feet dry and warm. They were relatively long and had solid colors, hidden under long trousers, treated as an accessory that shouldn’t attract much attention.
- It wasn’t until the 1920s and 1930s that subtle style elements started appearing on men’s socks – delicate patterns like stripes or checks. Shorter trousers became fashionable, exposing socks, allowing for experimentation with colors and patterns.
- In the 1940s, men’s socks were already seen as one of the fairly important elements of attire, indicating carefulness in outfit selection. We observe a return to moderate patterns, but attention was paid to whether the socks matched the rest of the outfit – especially when paired with a suit.
- The 1950s and 1960s brought more diversity – men boldly chose colors and patterns, though still quite classic – geometric motifs, dots, and more stripes appeared.
- The fashion of the 1970s is a period when men bravely experimented with their style – using clothing to express their individuality. They embraced extravagant patterns, bright colors, and synthetic fabrics. We all remember the disco culture and its leather-denim outfits, wide ties, and shirts with large collars. Men’s socks of that era also expressed the free spirit of the time – bold colors and patterns inspired by street art became popular, drawing attention.
- In the 1980s and 1990s, we see even greater diversity. Men’s socks not only express individual style but can also indicate belonging to a specific subculture. Neon colors, long inscriptions, and models from favorite sports brands emerged.

Stylish Men’s Socks Today
Today, we have unlimited possibilities in choosing men’s socks. Socks for every occasion have emerged – from elegant, subtle patterns to avant-garde and hipster designs, to sporty models providing comfort during physical activity. This small but now quite significant wardrobe element allows men to express their own individual style. While there is a return to classics, especially in smart-casual style, neutral-colored men’s socks with delicate patterns are gaining popularity. However, businessmen, TV presenters, groomsmen, and people working in the creative industry are embracing a completely different trend – colorful socks. These look particularly good with fashionable, ankle-rolled suit trousers. Various patterns such as dots, stripes, or diamonds are equally interesting!
The transformations that men’s socks have undergone reflect the evolution of men’s fashion.
The evolution of men’s style is closely related to how men themselves perceive their clothing. Initially, this wardrobe element was solely a practical, rather inconspicuous addition. Today, men’s socks can emphasize the personality and taste of every man. Sometimes, they become the starting point for the entire outfit. Their significance has grown and changed dramatically. Despite a tumultuous history and centuries of neglect, they have become an indispensable element of men’s styling.
